Calling Leadership
New Leadership Team at Glendale Church of the Brethren - From Left to Right we have June Cheleden, Lucile Leard, Jim LeFever (Moderator), and Karen Lefever.
Since we are in the middle of national election I thought I would contrast the differences between Calling Leadership and Electing Leadership.
1) Calling matches a person’s gifts, talents, and passions with a ministry, while electing is about filling a slot.
2) Calling is an act of God which happens through the faith community, while electing is about popularity.
3) Calling is about becoming a servant leader, while electing is about gaining power.
4) Calling is about looking past the superficial and looking into the heart (consider David), while electing is about who has the best hair or sound bite.
5) Calling is about being a good steward and taking time out for a Sabbath (once every 7 years) Rest, while electing is about maintaining power.
6) Calling is about submitting to God’s will, while electing is about exercising your power.
7) Calling requires us to enter into prayer reflection, while electing is about marketing.
Calling requires us to work in covenant with our sisters and brothers in Christ, while electing is about the discretionary use of power.
9) Calling puts our faith in God’s plan, while electing is all about our agenda.
10) Calling is about everybody “winning,” while elections create winners and losers.
I may have overdrawn this a bit, but after viewing the Republican and Democratic debates, I don’ t think so! Let us pray for our “Called Out Leadership” as they humbly lead us in Jesus’ Way.
Peace!
